Money is the problem
Living in America we all believe we are free but freedom comes with knowledge and knowing. Our government believes that ignorance is bliss to it's citizens, this is not freedom. We have a right to know what is going on behind closed doors especially if it is negatively affecting our health and the health of our children. Beef is the largest revenue source for American agriculture nationwide, it is a one hundred and fifty billion dollar industry and the government is not going to let that fail. The European Union (EU) has banned the use of hormones in it's food industry and states that all sex hormones used in the United States could pose a rise of cancers in humans and especially in children. So why has the U.S. still allowed us to consume these harmful chemicals? simple answer, the mighty dollar. Recombinant bovine growth hormone or rBGH was approved in 1994 by the FDA for sale and is either injected or implanted under the animals skin, cattle treated with rBGH suffer higher rates of mastitis, an infection of the udder which creates puss and bacteria that contaminates the milk. The farmers then inject them with antibiotics which also ends up in our milk. Michael Hansen, phd., a research associate with the consumer policy institute a division of consumers union, states there are no benefits for humans who consume these hormones and will affect children even more because, "Children drink a lot more milk per unit of body weight than adults." These hormones are given to more than 90% of cows in the U.S. and are suspected to be linked to premature sexual development in young girls. I have seen this first hand with my nine year old daughter who started going through puberty at seven years old, she had to start wearing sports bras and using deodorant and has pubic hair already. This is a scary thing for a parent when you know your child is not emotionally ready for the physical changes that are happening in their bodies. In the late 1970's the U.S. banned a growth hormone (DES) known to cause cancer. Instead of destroying the hormones it was shipped and sold to Puerto Rico where farmers liberally injected their livestock. Not long after thousands of children as young as two years old were found to have reached full sexual maturity. The cause was the residual DES found in the meat the children had consumed. The government will not test for that here because if these hormones were to be found harmful the corporate farming industry would crash resulting in billions of dollars lost. If you remember years ago Oprah Winfrey had a guest on her shoe named Howard Lyman a cattle rancher who was trying to expose the truth, both were sued by the cattle industry and Oprah refuses to even touch on this subject any more. If you are going to eat meat please try and buy from your local farmers markets or small farms that can prove they do not participate in the use of hormones. It is not only harmful to us but the animals as well.
